Sound Analysis within OTS
As there is no storyline or characteristics in the opening title sequence of 'Sinister ' (2012) we do not have the music trying to convey the audience to have emotions for the characters on the screen for example like building suspense. Instead as the opening sequence is shot like old film footage the soundtrack is intended to enhance the realism of the soundtrack and convince the viewer it could be real therefore increasing the overall creepiness of it all. The soundtrack in this is a lot of cracking and fuzzing sounds to make the images feel more creepy and distorted almost representing the footage itself.(W.T)
In intro of 'Saw' (2004) the sound starts of as gentle waves to relate to what you are seeing and the peacefulness of the moment, during this a high pitched but suttle sound is heard giving a sinister feeling to the situation and hinting that the tranquillity is about to be shattered. as the man wakes up there's a sense of panic which is reflected in the soundtrack as it turns to whirling like music and then quietens as the man finds his feat and comes to his senses. For a while after we get a quiet low pitch sound to symbolise the that the sequence has slowed down and as a voice from the dark is heard the sound increases in volume as reflecting the new sense of panic on the protagonist and how its trying to reflect that panic on the audience. when the extremely bright lights are turned on the effect on the protagonist is reflect via the sound effects once again as we get this loud sudden shock to allow the viewer to convey with the feelings of the protagonist.we then get a large rushing sound to build up the tension as the unknown is reviled and as it is the pitch rise up and and the sound becomes dominant and the sudden low pitch thumps as the camera changes shots in sudden movements.(W.T)
Throughout the sequence of 'The Woman in Black' (2012) the music get progressively louder, starting of as an tune representing innocences to co-onside with the children playing with there dolls. As the sequence continues, the music gets progressively more disturbing and evil to show the children are losing their innocence, the emphasis on the sound of the toy's being broken is also symbolic of the children's child like innocence being destroyed.(W.T)
The dialogue in the opening sequence of 'The Ring' (2002) is supposed to convey a sense of normality thereby making the whole situation more creepy as it feels more realistic, the non-diegetic sound of the rain provides more of an atmosphere and the introduction towards the end of the girls dialogue builds up suspense but as the subject goes another way the suspense stops. when the phone rings the sound is faded but still dominant as there are no other dominant sounds at this time, this also applies to the TV when it turns on the rest is silence creating suspense and keeping the viewer guessing. For use of a suttle soundtrack creates a some what creepy atmosphere. When we get to the climax is there is a fairly monotone beeping sound and a little fuzz this relates to the television sound and linked in with the visuals creates a extremely scary climax.(W.T)
