By using google trends, you can see how often a topic or word is searched into google. Above is the table from how often 'Horror' is searched on google. As you can see there is a upward trend as on average you can see the interest is growing over time. It is also interesting to notice that there are a lot of sharp increases in the graph, by looking into the graph i found that these happen every year around October and November time. This is obviously due to this time being around halloween, horror movies aren't as relevant around other times in the year. It is also interesting to notice that in October 2010 (Point F) there is only 43% of the amount of searches compared to October 2013 (Point A). So for every 100 searches in 2013, there has only been 43 in 2010, that amount has over doubled in just 3 years. This means that we should aim to release our movie by around this time, this would mean more people would actually watch the film and this turn would make more money. (HC)
It is also interesting to note the related searches, what people have searched as well as also horror. The top being american horror, this could be due to them celebrating halloween a lot more heavily in the U.S.A compared to here in the U.K, i can infer this from me going there in the past during this time, and other internet sources about how much horror they watch compared to us.
It might of been a good idea to replicate a movie in a american theme, since it is so popular. But in my opinion it would be hard to do and possible be expensive considering our budget is not very high. (HC)

Since we were starting to become more interested in choosing paranormal as our sub genre, we decided to see what results came up when we searched on Google trends. It is a similar trend to just searching horror, it greatly peaks around autumn and around Halloween time. But there has been a lot fewer searches this year in 2013, as you can see the trend is starting to fall. This could show that not as many people are searching horror this year. This shows a possible gap in the market for us to produce a paranormal themed horror. (HC)
This graph shows the interest over time for the 'Slasher' sub-genre, as you can see there was a slight increase in interest in the later half of 2011, since then it has gradually been increasing over time, showing that it is quite a popular sub-genre. (HC)

We also looked at the interest over time of the films we are going to take inspiration from. This will help us see if there is a gap in the market for our OTS. We researched films such as Blair Witch Project (1999), Them (2006) and The Ring (2002). We are taking inspiration from these films as we liked the idea of having an unseen killer, similar to The Blair Witch Project (1999) where you cannot see how the people are killed. We research the interests of these film to help target our audience and see if there is a rising correlation of interests for each of thee films. Here are the results:
(EP) |
Them (2006)
As you can see there was a large increase in the interest of this film through 2006-2007 due to its release date in 2006. However after that there was a significant decrease in the interest, possibly due to other horror films being produced. Although there is not a large interest in this film at the present time, this means there could possibly be a gap in the market for our OTS idea.

We also looked at the regional interest to see which countries were viewing this film the most. This is a great way to gain information about our target audience. As we will be targeting a UK audience, this film wasn't very popular in this region. Therefore our idea could intrest the UK, however it could mean that the population are not interested in this specific style of horror film.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)
As you can see this film has been very popular since it's release in 1999. There has been a constant increase and decrease in the interests of this film from 1999-2013. However at the present time the interests are at their lowest point since the release. This could mean that an audience may not want to watch our OTS as it pays homage to this classic film However it could mean that due to the lack of interest there is a gap in the market for us to bring back the creepy wood, the unseen killer and the horrified victims we all love.

The main regional interest stems from large countries such as America. This is useful as it means there is a massive interest in this film over the world. As our OTS takes direct inspiration from this film this shows that the market is still open for our sequence. It also means that the target audience is vast, allowing our OTS to make it big all over the world.
(EP) |
The Ring (2002)
As you can see the intrest of this film has decreased substantially since its release This shows that the idea of this horror film may have been overused due to the amount of films similar to this one. However we are not taking much inspiration from this film, only the death scene at the end with the zoom in on the victims face. This means that the interests of this film shouldn't affect our marketing and distribution too much.

The regional interest of this film is not in the specific countries we were aiming to target. Therefore we wouldn't have a very wide audience for our OTS. However because we are not taking all our inspiration from this film there is a chance we will be able to market our film as it's very different to filoms that have already been produced.
